ARTS1691 - Bilingualism

Sorting out the two languages

There are two hypothesis about how bilingual children sort out the two languages:

  • Unitary System Hypothesis: Bilingual children initially construct only one lexicon/grammar
  • Separate Systems Hypothesis: Bilingual children build two lexicon/grammars in parallel, and use both properly.

Cognitive Effect of Bilingualism

  • Metalinguistic awareness
  • Extralinguistic factors

Children who speak one of their languages only at home often have a restricted vocabulary (thanks to the role of input).
