ARTS1691 - Historical Linguistics

Historical Linguistics is about change of language; change in sound systems, lexicons and semantics, grammar and pragmatics. To an extent how we view language change.

Main Concerns

The five main concerns of Historical Linguistics are:

  • To describe and account for observed change within a particular language
  • To reconstruct pre-history of languages in order to determine their relationships and group them into language families
  • To develop theories about language change
  • To describe history of speech within communities
  • To study etymology; history of words.
