Prokaryotes

Prokaryotes are a group of single-celled organisms lacking a nucleus.

Two Types

Archaea and Bacteria.

Archaea vs Bacteria

  • Each a domain of life
  • Most numerous type of organism
  • Both have a cell wall
  • Similar size (and often shape)
  • Similar cell structure
  • Different cell composition
  • Similar flagella and methods of operation

Types of Prokaryotic Cell

This is beyond the course, but:

  • Gram-Positive Bacteria
    • 1 membrane and cell wall
  • Gram-Negative Bacteria
    • 2 membranes, 1 cell wall
  • Archaeal
